Mam Tor — The Shivering Mountain
Time to explore
Mam Tor, overlooking Castleton at the western end of the Hope Valley, is one of the Peak District’s most celebrated summits. Nicknamed the “Shivering Mountain” for its famous landslips, this shapely hill rewards walkers with sweeping views over Edale, Kinder plateau, and the limestone dales below. Its broad, paved path and family-friendly climb make it a favourite for sunrise hikes and first-time summits alike.
Crowned by the traces of an Iron Age hill fort and forming the start of the Great Ridge to Lose Hill, Mam Tor combines big scenery with layered history. From wind-rippled grasses to the dramatic escarpment edges, it’s a compact adventure that captures the spirit of the Peaks in a single, unforgettable walk.
